Philadelphia Public Art: Schuylkill River
Public art is a part of Philadelphia's rich history, part of its evolving culture and collective memory. It reflects and reveals a city's society and adds meaning to it. Public art can express community values, enhance the environment, transform a landscape, heighten public awareness, question its assumptions. Placed in public sites, this art is there for everyone, a form of collective community expression. Public art is a reflection of how we see the world, and the artist’s response to a city's time and place combined with the public's own sense of who they are.
In the Spring of 2009 I began a project to photograph Philadelphia's Public Art, starting along the Schuylkill River, then the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, and beyond. The project is expected to last at least two years.
