Amtrak's Auto Train: Sanford, Florida to Lorton, Virginia
The photos in the gallery document an auto train trip from Sanford, Florida, north to Lorton, Virginia taken in early May, 2009.
The train began the 855 mile trip on time at 4:00pm with 7 sleeper cars, 4 coach cars, 3 dining cars, and 2 lounge cars, plus enough vehicle carrier cars to hold 253 vehicles. There were 468 passengers aboard the train, plus 27 staff members and 2 engineers. The train was pulled by a pair of diesel powered engines, and was a little more than 3/4 of a mile in length. While the trip normally takes 17.5 hours, we arrived in Lorton, Virginia the next morning a half hour early at 9:00am. While on the train, each passenger enjoyed a 3 course dinner and breakfast.
