Port Foster, Deception Island
Port Foster is a highly sheltered harbor in Antarctica, located in the center Deception Island in the South Shetland Islands. The harbor was named Port Foster after Henry Foster, commander of the HMS Chanticleer, who made pendulum and magnetic observations in the harbor in 1829.
The harbor, 6.2 by 4.3 miles (10 by 7 km), is a caldera, formed by a gigantic volcanic eruption and later flooded by the sea. The only entrance to Port Foster is Neptune's Bellows, an 1,840 foot (560 m) wide channel at the southeast corner of the island.
