Greeland: Renodde
Scoresby Sund, named after the English explorer William Scoresby, who in 1822 mapped the fjord area in great detail, is an inlet system of the Greenland Sea on the eastern coast of Greenland. It has a main body approximately 68 miles (110 km) long which branches into a system of fjords covering 14,700 sq miles (38,000 km2). The depth of some of its fjords is as much as 4,760 feet (1,450m). Scoresby Sund is the largest and longest fjord system in the world.
Renodde, located at the Rodefjord, which is located in the Scoresby Sund fjord system, is well above the Arctic Circle. It's hills and mountains are the habitat preferred by Muskox. Muskox are very skittish and wary of humans. I was able to position myself at the top of a hill, partly hidden to get the closeup images of the muskox. Shortly after taking the muskox images, the muskox saw some movement. The muskox charged off across the valley below with that sighting as the wind direction changed, putting us downwind.
The muskox are Arctic mammals of the family Bovidae, noted for their thick coat and for the strong odor emitted by males, from which their name is derived, however, muskox actually have no musk glands.
